The Advantages and Disadvantages of Pendant Lights
Quality lighting can really make or break your home design, as it directly affects the comfort and overall function of your home. Obviously, then, it is a very good idea to outfit your home with the right type of lighting and lighting fixtures. With that in mind, lets take a look at one specific lighting fixture and what its advantages or disadvantages might be.
WHAT IS A PENDANT LIGHT?
Much like a jewelry pendant, Pendant lighting from Premiere Luminaire hangs from a single fixture that fastens to the ceiling, often suspended by a chain or cord or even a metal rod. Sometimes called a drop light or suspended light (or, simply, “suspender”), these lights are often used in multiples to illuminate parts of a large room or specific area. They come in many different shapes and sizes, of course, and can be made out of a wide variety of textiles as well. These might include metal, glass, concrete, or plastic.
HOW TO USE A PENDANT LIGHT?
Pendant lights tend to be smaller than other lighting fixtures—again, they are often used in multiples—so it is important to remember the best way to use them. For example, you typically will use more than one, but it is generally better to use an odd number than an even number. Also, a general rule of thumb is that you should mount a pendant light between 28 and 38 inches above the counter or at least 72 inches above the floor.
PENDANT LIGHT ADVANTAGES
Pendant lights offer quite a few advantages depending, of course, on your particular needs. Obviously, these can provide a contemporary look but there are so many designs to choose from (so that might be another advantage) so you can opt for whatever aesthetic you want. Here are a few other benefits:
- Height can be adjusted (though you should try to adhere to the recommendations for optimal effect)
- Several thousand different styles
- Minimal space
- Broader spectrum of light (than other styles)
- Ideal for concentrated light
- Focused like a spotlight but more decorative
- Reasonably priced
PENDANT LIGHT DISADVANTAGES
Not to discourage from using a pendant light, but there may be some instances in which this would not be the ideal choice:
- Does not work in every room
- Bulb type limitation can vary
- Not intended to provide full illumination
- Probably will need to buy more than one to achieve the full effect
